Intimacy coordination, consulting & training

INTIMACY COORDINATION

How do we work?

Intimate scenes can often put performers in a very vulnerable position. Moreover, discussing these scenes and the actors' levels of consent can sometimes be awkward, complicated by power dynamics and lead to misunderstandings. For this reason, in addition to strategies to minimise the risks during filming, a very important part of our work is to enable clear and transparent language in which we can establish a professional and open dialogue between the different departments about these scenes.

This coordination part is at the heart of our role, so it is best to include intimacy coordinators when the production is still in the pre-production phase.

Our methodology is based on rigorous protocols of good practice when working with intimate scenes that are widespread in other production workplaces such as the U.K. and U.S where the role of the intimacy coordinator is already well established.

When a production hires us to coordinate intimate scenes, our workflow consists of script read reports, preparation conversations, rehearsals, pre-shoot risk assessment, shooting and can continue through to post-production:

THE PRE-PRODUCTION PHASE

Prior preparation and discussions with the various production departments are a priority and an essential part of our work.

This includes:

  • Reading the script, identifying the intimate content and classifying it according to the level of intimacy.
  • Meetings with producers, showrunners, director and first assistant director to get to know the artistic vision and logistics of the scenes.
  • Individual meetings with the actors to discuss the scenes, explore their level of comfortability, consent and any concerns, and then define and collaborate with them on the strategies that will be used during filming to carry out these scenes safely and successfully.
  • If necessary, further meetings with the director and/or production team.
  • Risk assessment of each intimate sequence and design of risk reduction strategies.
  • Design of the closed set protocol together with the management team to be included in the shooting orders.
  • Meetings with the wardrobe team to define the modesty garments* to be used for each actor or any other type of coverage that will be needed on set. If necessary, meetings would also be held with the make-up department, or any other department, such as the art department or stunt department.
  • Design of the physical barriers** to be used for the rehearsal and filming of the intimate scenes.
  • Introduction to the team of reduced set protocols and good practice protocols for filming intimate scenes.

THE REHEARSAL PROCESS

Rehearsing the scenes with the actors and director before arriving on set and being able to define the choreography and safety strategies (barriers, modesty garments*) makes the day of shooting more comfortable and confident about the scene to be shot and creativity flows more easily.

  • Introductory exercises on mutual consent and working methodology.
  • Conversation about the choreography of the intimate scene and the artistic vision of the director.
  • Choreography rehearsal. These rehearsals will always take place without nudity and as a rule the actors will not rehearse kissing in rehearsal.
  • Introduction to the material to be used as a modesty garment and physical barriers.

THE DAY OF SHOOTING

Depending on the risk assessment of the scenes, it will have been decided whether the presence of the privacy coordinator on set will be necessary.

If it is a scene with a high intimate content:

  • Contact with the actors and brief reminder of how to work.
  • Review of the reduced set protocol.
  • Rehearsal on location with the director and director of photography of the scene to remember and finalise the choreography.
  • Presence on set during filming to help resolve any eventualities and ensure that everything goes according to plan.

AFTER THE PRODUCTION HAS WRAPPED UP

  • Evaluating the process and follow up check-ins with the actors.
  • Final scene feedback report. If the production so wishes, it would follow through to post-production to ensure that the reduced equipment protocols are adhered to in the edit and that the limits agreed with the actors are adhered to in the final product.

*Modesty garments are garments especially designed to cover the actors' private parts in a discreet manner, so that these parts are covered but on camera the impression of nudity is created.

**Physical barriers are elements designed to prevent genital contact between actors during intimate scenes.

CONSULTANCY

In addition to our intimacy coordination services, we also offer consultancy services for each project. These services are offered to a production company with a project with high intimate content, to an experienced director who wants to know more about how to deal with these scenes, or to an actor/actress who is looking for the best way to deal with scenes with intimate content.

TRAINING FOR INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS

We design training programmes for directors, actors, producers and other professionals in the audiovisual industry, specially adapted to each group and need. The intention of these workshops is to share basic tools to work with intimate scenes in a safe and creative way, to introduce good practices in the industry and to raise awareness of our methodology. For more information please contact us.

*At present we do not offer training to become an intimacy coordinator.
